Differences in the selection of servo motors and stepper motors for laser cutting machines

Both servo motors and stepper motors can be used for driving laser cutting machines, and many companies choose the former when purchasing laser cutting machines. Why? The servo motor has low operating noise and high accuracy. Using an AC servo motor as the driver can form a high-precision, high-performance semi closed-loop or closed-loop control system like a DC servo motor. Due to the brushless structure inside the AC servo motor, it hardly requires maintenance and has a relatively small volume, which is beneficial for improving speed and power. Currently, it has replaced DC servo motors on a large scale. After the emergence of a fully digital AC servo system using high-speed microprocessors and dedicated digital signal processors (DSP), the original hardware servo control was changed to software servo control. Some advanced algorithms in modern control theory were implemented, greatly improving the performance of the servo system. Therefore, the servo unit can greatly improve machining efficiency and accuracy, but the price of the servo drive unit is also high. With the gradual improvement of servo control technology, servo drive units are gradually becoming the main force of drive units, and the price of servo drive units is also gradually decreasing.

There are two types of servo drivers. A type of servo control using pulse control, where the driver is closed-loop with the motor but not fed back to the CNC system, can be referred to as open-loop control to some extent. Another method is voltage control, which controls the speed of the motor through the high and low voltage. The feedback signal of the motor is fed back to the CNC system through the driver for position control.

When selecting a drive unit, it is also necessary to consider the proportion of the price of the drive unit in the entire CNC machine tool. Generally, stepper drive units are chosen for lower priced CNC machine tools, while servo drive units are chosen for higher priced machine tools. But when selecting the drive unit, it is also necessary to consider the matching problem between the drive unit and the CNC system. When selecting a closed-loop control system, it is necessary to choose a closed-loop servo drive unit. AC servo systems outperform stepper motors in many performance aspects.

1. CNC machine tool: CNC machine tools are precision machining equipment that have high requirements for cutting accuracy and speed. The application of integrated servo motors can improve the processing efficiency and accuracy of CNC machine tools, thereby improving production efficiency and quality.

2. Plasma cutting machine: Plasma cutting machines are mainly used for metal cutting, requiring fast cutting speed and high accuracy. The application of integrated servo motors can improve the cutting accuracy and speed of plasma cutting machines, while reducing energy consumption.

3. Laser cutting machine: Laser cutting machines use high-energy laser beams to cut materials, requiring fast cutting speed and high accuracy. The application of integrated servo motors can improve the cutting accuracy and speed of laser cutting machines, while ensuring the quality of the cutting section.

4. Water cutting machine: Water cutting machines use high-pressure water flow to cut materials, requiring fast cutting speed and high accuracy. The application of integrated servo motors can improve the cutting accuracy and speed of water cutting machines, while reducing material damage.
